Tips for using the internet

   Keyboard shortcuts:

  1. Press Ctrl + f to find a word on any page. The shortcut brings up a Find windowbox where you can type in a word to search for on a page. (IE/NS)


  2. Press Ctrl + d to bookmark a page you are visiting. (IE/NS)


  3. Press Ctrl + h to open the History file in. (IE/NS)


  4. Press Ctrl + e to open the Search menu.


  5. Press Ctrl + i to open the Favorites list.


  6. Press Ctrl + n to open a new browser window.


  7. Press Ctrl + o to type in a remote address.


  8. Press Ctrl + p to print a page. (IE/NS)


  9. Press Ctrl + Home key to return to the top of a page. (IE/NS)


  10. Press Ctrl + End key to go to the bottom of a page. (IE/NS)


  11. Press Alt + F4 key to close an "active" window or PopUp. (IE/NS)


  12. Press the Page Up or Page Down keys to scroll a page.(IE only)


  13. To open a new browser window in IE, hold the Shift key while clicking on a link with the Mouse. This is handy when you want to visit a link but don't want to leave the page you're on.
    Try it HERE Remember to hold down the Shift key before you mouse click the link.
    (IE only) In NS it opens a save file window


  14. Save Time - type in the name of the site you want , press Ctrl + Enter and the http://www.______.com are completed for you. Example: type in digitease, press Ctrl + Enter and the results will be http://www.digitease.com


  15. If you visit a Web site and start hearing background music or some audio that you'd rather escape, you don't have to turn off your computer's speaker. Try just pressing the Esc key, which often cuts the audio. The exception is Flash movies, which keep playing the soundtrack no matter how hard you try to Esc.


Internet Explorer F Key Shortcuts:

  • Press F1 brings up the help window. (IE/NS)


  • Press F5 refreshes the current page (reload). (IE only)


  • Press F6 highlights the address bar to type in a new URL. (IE only)


  • Press F11  Adjusts the browser to full window. Press it a second time to return to normal window.
    Also note that if you right click the Toolbar in this mode you can select autohide, just like the Taskbar option. Thus your entire screen is your browser window.
    To view the Toolbar place your cursor at the top of your screen and the bar appears.

• You can highlight text by holding down the Shift key and using the arrow keys to move the cursor to the end of the section you want to highlight. Then you can...

Ctrl + B will bold text.
Ctrl + U will underline text.
Ctrl + I will italicize.

• When you press CTRL+ESC, followed by a u, the Shut Down Windows dialog is invoked.

• A shortcut to getting to the properties even faster is to press Alt-Enter on the keyboard instead. If the currently selected object has a properties page, usually Alt-Enter will bring it right up.

Windows Key shortcuts
Windows key + R will open the Start menu's Run box
Windows key + F will open the Start menu's Find window
Windows key + E will quickly launch Explorer
Windows key + Pause/Break will open the System Properties window

Mouse Click/Keyboard Modifier Combinations for Shell Objects

SHIFT+right click: Displays a shortcut menu containing alternative commands

SHIFT+double click: Runs the alternate default command (the second item on the menu)

ALT+double click: Displays properties

SHIFT+DELETE: Deletes an item immediately without placing it in the Recycle Bin

General Keyboard-Only Commands

F1: Starts Windows Help

F10: Activates menu bar options

SHIFT+F10 Opens a shortcut menu for the selected item (this is the same as right-clicking an object

CTRL+ESC: Opens the Start menu (use the ARROW keys to select an item)

CTRL+ESC or ESC: Selects the Start button (press TAB to select the taskbar, or press SHIFT+F10 for a context menu)

ALT+DOWN ARROW: Opens a drop-down list box

ALT+TAB: Switch to another running program (hold down the ALT key and then press the TAB key to view the task-switching window)

SHIFT: Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you insert a CD-ROM to bypass the automatic-run feature

ALT+SPACE: Displays the main window's System menu (from the System menu, you can restore, move, resize, minimize, maximize, or close the window)

ALT+- (ALT+hyphen): Displays the Multiple Document Interface (MDI) child window's System menu (from the MDI child window's System menu, you can restore, move, resize, minimize, maximize, or close the child window)

CTRL+TAB: Switch to the next child window of a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) program

ALT+underlined letter in menu: Opens the menu

ALT+F4: Closes the current window

CTRL+F4: Closes the current Multiple Document Interface (MDI) window

ALT+F6: Switch between multiple windows in the same program (for example, when the Notepad Find dialog box is displayed, ALT+F6 switches between the Find dialog box and the main Notepad window)

Shell Objects and General Folder/Windows Explorer Shortcuts

For a selected object:

F2: Rename object
F3: Find all files
CTRL+X: Cut
CTRL+C: Copy
CTRL+V: Paste

SHIFT+DELETE: Delete selection immediately, without moving the item to the Recycle Bin

ALT+ENTER: Open the properties for the selected object


MS EXCEL

Show all formulas:
Ctrl + ` ( ` being the accent mark on the key to the left of the number 1.
The Home button will take you to the first column of the current row.
The End button then followed by an arrow key will take you to the first / last cell in the current column / row. (Up and down arrows make column movements. The right and left arrows make row movements.)
Ctrl + Home will take you to cell A1.
Ctrl + Shift + Home will highlight everything between the currently selected cell and A1.

MS WORD
Print Preview Ctrl + F2.

Justification Shortcuts:

Ctrl + L left aligns the current paragraph.
Ctrl + E center aligns the current paragraph.
Ctrl + R right aligns the current paragraph.
Ctrl + J fully justifies the current paragraph. (Where the text is spread out completely to both left and right margins.)

Formatting Shortcuts:

Ctrl + B will bold either the highlighted text or the next text to be typed.
Ctrl + I will Italicize the highlighted text or the next text to be typed.
Ctrl + U will underline the highlighted text or the next text to be typed.
Ctrl + Shift + D will double underline highlighted text or the next text to be typed.
Ctrl + Shift + W will underline the highlighted text or the next text to be typed but not the spaces between the words.
Ctrl + = will convert the highlighted text into subscript.
Ctrl + plus sign (+) will convert the highlighted text into superscript.
Repeating the same key combination used to turn the formatting on can often turn off these formatting options. Ctrl + Spacebar may also turn a formatting option off.
